HAMDEN, Conn. - UMass baseball held a 2-1 lead going into the bottom of the seventh inning, but a run-scoring single tied the game and a three-run home run by John Delaney was the deciding factor as Quinnipiac (15-33) defeated the Minutemen (17-25), 5-2, on Tuesday afternoon at QU Baseball Field. Jim Macdonald (Cheshire, Conn.) was 2-for-4 and homered, and Mike Donato (East Hartford, Conn.) was 3-for-4 to lead the UMass offense. Eric Weber (2-4) threw a complete-game to earn the win, allowing two runs on seven hits. Mitchell Eilenberg (Brooklyn, N.Y.) got the start on the mound for the Minutemen, allowing three hits and one run in three innings. UMass used six different relievers, with Ryan Walczak (Taunton, Mass.) (0-2) being charged with the loss.
Pete Kummerfeldt tripled down the left field line with one on and two outs in the bottom of the first inning to give the Bobcats an early 1-0 lead.
Macdonald led off the top of the second with a single and went first-to-third on a single through the right side off the bat of Donato to give UMass runners on the corners. Bryan Garrity (Peabody, Mass.) drove in Macdonald with a sacrifice fly to right to tie the game at one.
UMass took the lead in the sixth inning when Macdonald sent Weber's offering over the left field wall for his third home run of the season, making it 2-1.
Byrn Doyle led off Quinnipiac's half of the seventh inning with a single and was bunted over to second. He then scored on a single by Bobak Emamian to give the Bobcats a one-run lead. Ben Farina followed with a single to put two on for Delaney, who homered to left field, making it 5-2.
The Minutemen managed hits in the eighth and ninth, but Weber was tough down the stretch, quelling any attempts at a comeback.
With his second start of the season, Eilenberg has now made 20 pitching appearances this season. That is tied for the second highest total in UMass history. Ron Villone, now of the St. Louis Cardinals, appeared in 27 games in 1991 for the Minutemen.
UMass returns home to close the 2008 season with a three-game Atlantic 10 series against Fordham. The first game is slated for Thursday at 3 p.m.
