KINGSTON, R.I. - After dropping the opening game of Saturday's doubleheader at Rhode Island (26-22-1, 13-9-1 A-10), 3-1, the UMass baseball team (17-23, 10-13 A-10) got back on track in the second game, winning 7-3 at Bill Beck Field. Adam Tempesta (Brockton, Mass.) was 4-for-8 on the day, going 2-for-3 with a run in game-one and then going 2-for-5 with three RBI and a run in game-two. Mike Dicato (Winthrop, Mass.) (4-3) was the tough-luck loser in game-one, pitching eight strong innings, allowing two runs on six hits and striking out five. Mitchell Clegg (Woburn, Mass.) (4-4) got the win in the second game, going seven innings and allowing two runs on seven hits while striking out two. UMass pitchers did not walk a single batter in either game.
In game-one, DiCato didn't allow a hit until the fifth inning when Dan Rhault led off with a single. After advancing to third on another single, he scored on a double play groundball to give the Rams a 1-0 lead.
The Minutemen got that run back in the top of the sixth when Tempesta singled, stole second, and scored on Mike Donato's (East Hartford, Conn.) two-out single to left field.
Rhode Island went on to score single runs in the sixth and eighth innings, with Zach Zaneski driving in the winning run in the sixth with a RBI groundout.
In game-two, the Rams held a 1-0 lead going into the top of the fifth inning when the Minutemen offense exploded for five runs. A walk and two singles loaded the bases with one-out for Tempesta, who singled to left field, driving in two runs. In the next at-bat, Jim Macdonald (Cheshire, Conn.) doubled to left-center, driving in two more runs. Macdonald would later score on an error by the catcher, URI's second of three errors in the inning, to give UMass a 5-1 lead.
The Minutemen added a run in the sixth when Brian Baudinet (Watertown, Conn.) reached on an error, advanced on a single and a balk, and eventually scored on Tempesta's sacrifice fly to center.
The Rams scored a run in the seventh and another in the eighth, making it a 6-3 game, but UMass scored again in the ninth. Macdonald, singled, stole second, and advanced to third on a groundout before stealing home to make it a 7-4 game.
Mitchell Eilenberg (Brooklyn, N.Y.) pitched the final two innings for UMass, allowing one run on two hits, to pick up his sixth save of the season.
The Minutemen and Rams conclude their three-game series on Sunday with first pitch slated for noon.
