Box Score

KINGSTON, R.I. - A home run to lead off the fourth inning and an RBI single the following inning, both off the bat of Zach Zaneski, led Rhode Island (27-22-1, 14-9-1 A-10) past UMass (17-24, 10-14 A-10), 3-2, in Sunday afternoon's Atlantic 10 baseball game at Bill Beck Field. The Rams scored twice in the fourth inning to take a 2-0 lead, but the Minutemen came right back with two of their own in the top of the fifth, only to see URI score what proved to be the game-winner in the bottom half of the inning.

Jamie Degidio (3-1) earned the victory in relief of starter Eric Smith, hurling 2 2/3 shutout innings and allowing three hits while striking out four. Zaneski was 2-for-4 on the day with a home run and two RBI.

Jared Freni (Malden, Mass.) (0-4) took the loss for UMass. The sophomore righty went 4 1/3 innings, allowing three runs on three hits and five walks. Nick Serino (Saugus, Mass.) tossed 3 2/3 shutout innings in relief of Freni, allowing only two hits and striking out two. Andy Tuetken (Smithfield, R.I.) had the only multi-hit game for the Minutemen, going 2-for-4 with a run scored.

After Zaneski broke the scoreless tie with his leadoff home run in the fourth, Mike O'Malley reached on a bunt single in the next at-bat. After advancing to third on Oliver Palmer's single to right-center, O'Malley scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Rob Deveney, making it a 2-0 game.

In the top half of the next inning the Minutemen came right back to tie it. Tuetken and Andrew Black (Baltimore, Md.) led off the frame with back-to-back singles. Tuetken then scored on a throwing error by the pitcher, Smith, on a ball put in play by Brian Baudinet (Watertown, Conn.). In the next at-bat, Ryan Franczek (Chicopee, Mass.) hit a sacrifice fly to left that scored Black with UMass' second run.

After a one-out walk to Pete Mastors in the bottom of the fifth, Freni was lifted for Serino. Mastors then stole second and third, putting himself in scoring position for Zaneski, who delivered with a single through the right side that gave the Rams the lead.

Luke Demko came in to pitch the final two innings for the Rams, holding the Minutemen scoreless and earning the save.

UMass returns to action on Tuesday when it travels to Quinnipiac to take on the Bobcats on Tuesday at 3 p.m.
