Box Score

BURLINGTON, Vt. - Vermont (20-17) scored seven runs in the second inning and six more in the seventh as the host Catamounts topped UMass (14-20), 17-4, on Wednesday afternoon at Centennial Field. Kyle Massie collected four hits, scoring twice, and Justin Milo drove in five runs for Vermont. Brian Baudinet (Watertown, Conn.) went 3-for-5 with two doubles for UMass and Ryan Franczek (Chicopee, Mass.) was 2-for-4 with two RBI. Eric Thompson (4-1) threw two shutout innings in relief of starter Kyle Henry (3.0 IP, 4 ER) to earn the victory. Nick Serino (Saugus, Mass.) (2-3) allowed five runs in 1 1/3 innings to take the loss.

The Catamounts' big second inning started with the bases being loaded on two walks and a single with no outs. After a fielder's choice brought in the first run, a single loaded the bases again for Milo, who doubled to center field to clear the bases and make it 4-0. Two more walks, a hit-by-pitch, and a single completed the seven-run inning.

UMass got four of those runs right back in the top of the third. Ben Kessel (Richboro, Pa.) hit a one-out triple to center field and scored on Cody Kauffman's (Blue Bell, Pa.) single. Baudinet followed with a double down the left field line to put men at second and third for Franczek. The senior shortstop delivered with a single to center that plated both runners. Adam Tempesta (Brockton, Mass.) made it five-straight hits for the Minutemen with a double to left center that scored Franczek with UMass' fourth run.

After scoring single runs in the fourth and sixth innings, Vermont put together another big inning in the seventh, pushing six more runs across. With one out, three-straight singles loaded the bases for Jason Leclerc's 2 RBI double to left field. Leclerc later scored on a wild pitch, Eric Fredette and Massie added RBI singles, Milo walked with the bases loaded to open up a 15-4 lead.

The Catamounts plated two more runs in the eighth to make it a 17-4 game.

Vermont outhit UMass 19-9 in the game.

The Minutemen return to action on Friday at 3 p.m. when they begin a key Atlantic 10 series at home vs. Dayton.
