NORRISTOWN, Pa. - UMass (13-19, 6-11 A-10) scored seven runs over the first three innings to jump out to a 7-0 lead and cruised to a 12-5 victory over Saint Joseph's (15-25, 7-10 A-10) on Saturday afternoon at Latshaw-McCarthy Field. Mike Dicato (Winthrop, Mass.) (4-1) pitched a complete-game for the Minutemen, allowing four earned runs on 10 hits, to win his fourth-straight start. Adam Tempesta (Brockton, Mass.) was 3-for-6 on the day with five RBI and two runs scored. Kyle Multner (Peabody, Mass.) also collected three hits, while Ryan Franczek (Chicopee, Mass.) and Garrett Glashoff (Buchanon, N.Y.) scored three runs each.
Dominic Favazza took the loss for the Hawks, going 2 2/3 innings and allowing seven runs, three earned, on six hits. Designated hitter Mike Coleman had the best day at the plate for Saint Joseph's, going 4-for-5 and scoring three times.
UMass jumped out to an early lead when Brian Baudinet (Watertown, Conn.), Franczek, and Tempesta started the game with three-straight hits to score two runs. Andrew Black (Baltimore, Md.) added a two-out RBI single later in the inning to make it a 3-0 game.
After a second inning that saw Glashoff single and later score on an error, the Minutemen put up three more runs in the third. Black singled to drive in Jim Macdonald (Cheshire, Conn.), who had reached on a catcher's interference. Multner and Baudinet's back-to-back RBI singles gave UMass a 7-0 lead.
Saint Joe's got on the board in the bottom of the third, using three-straight singles and a sacrifice fly to score twice.
UMass put up another three runs in the fifth, with Tempesta's two-run double to left-center being the big blow. It was the junior second baseman's 10th two-bagger of the season. Glashoff (single) and Franczek (hit-by-pitch) scored on the play.
Coleman's RBI triple and an error got two runs back for the Hawks in the fifth, but the Minutemen scored two of their own in the seventh when Tempesta singled through the left side with men at second and third.
The Hawks added a run in the eighth inning on a David Valesente RBI single to close the scoring at 12-5.
The Minutemen and Hawks conclude their series on Sunday at noon.
