NORRISTOWN, Pa. - Randy Mower allowed four runs on seven hits over seven innings of work to lead Saint Joseph's (15-24, 7-9 A-10) to an 11-4 victory over UMass (12-19, 5-11 A-10) on Friday afternoon at Latshaw-McCarthy Field. The Minutemen broke a 2-2 tie with a run in the top of the fifth, but the Hawks came back with four of their own in the bottom half of the inning and added two in the sixth and three more in the eighth. Bryan Leigh (Somerset, Mass.) took the loss for UMass, allowing six runs on seven hits in five innings. First baseman Brian Hartsell led Saint Joe's at the plate, hitting two doubles and driving in three runs. Brian Garrity (Peabody, Mass.) drove in a pair of runs for UMass and Andrew Black (Baltimore, Md.) added two hits.
SJU took an early 2-0 lead in the first inning on Ben Wendle's sacrifice fly and David Valesente's RBI single.
The Minutemen got those two runs back in the second. After a hit-by-pitch, walk, and bunt single loaded the bases, Garrity singled up the middle to drive in a pair.
After back-to-back singles by Black and Brian Baudinet (Watertown, Conn.) that gave UMass men at first and third, Baudinet was caught stealing but Black was able to score on the play and give the Minutemen the lead, 3-2, in the top of the fifth.
The Hawks' big inning came in the bottom of the fifth when they put up four runs on four hits and two walks, giving them a 6-3 lead. An RBI groundout by Joe Cook scored the first run and was followed by an RBI bunt single by Mike Coleman. Hartsell added a sacrifice fly and Valesente hit his second run scoring single of the game.
After singling to lead off the sixth, Ryan Franczek (Chicopee, Mass.) scored on Jim Macdonald's (Cheshire, Conn.) double down the left field line to get UMass back within two.
Matt Barnathan's double in the bottom of the sixth scored Ryan McDonald, who had reached on an error. Cook singled in the next at-bat to score pinch-runner Time Smith and widen the lead to 8-4.
The Hawks added three more runs in the eighth, with another double off the bat of Hartsell being the big blow, driving in two.
Baudinet went 1-for-4 on the day to increase his streak of reaching base safely to 30 games.
The Minutemen and Hawks will continue their three-game series on Saturday at 1 p.m.
