Women's Lax Drops 9-8 Heartbreaker At No. 13 Dartmouth

HANOVER, N.H. - No. 13 Dartmouth used a three-goal late rally to come from behind for a 9-8 win over the UMass women's lacrosse team Wednesday afternoon at Memorial Field. The Minutewomen never trailed until Kathleen Wallace scored the game-winner with 5:00 left to play. UMass managed to gain possession with just over a minute remaining in the game, but after a called timeout, could not get a shot on goal for the equalizer. The Minutewomen will return to action against No. 9 Yale next Wednesday, March 12 in McGuirk Stadium.
Six different Minutewomen (1-4) figured into the scoring column led by Kaytlin McCormick and Stephanie Hopkins who each had two goals. Melynda Zwick led the team with three points on a goal and two assists. Julie Papaleo led the team defensively with two caused turnovers and two groundballs - including the key turnover that gave UMass possession with a minute remaining in the game.
Dartmouth (3-1) was led by Eliza Bennett and Katherine Chiusano who each scored three goals. Chiusano also added an assist for a game-high four points.
UMass jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first eight minutes of action, but the Big Green answered to tie the game with a pair of goals mid-way through the first half. Both teams added a pair of goals each to go into halftime knotted at 4-4.
In the second half, McCormick tallied her second goal of the game to put UMass on top 5-4 just under four minutes into play before Bennett returned the favor to tie the game four minutes later.
Zwick and Hopkins netted back-to-back goals separated by just 18 seconds to go up 7-5 with 21:21 remaining in the game. After a Dartmouth goal pulled the Big Green within one, Hopkins scored a free position goal to keep the UMass cushion at two goals, 8-6, with just over 17 minutes to play.
With 16 minutes to go, Bennett scored her 10th goal of the season on a free position shot to make the game a one-goal affair once again. Chiusano netted her third goal 10 minutes later to tie the game. Wallace needed just 48 seconds after that to score the game-winner.
Dartmouth outshot UMass 23-to-14, but the Minutewomen held the edge in draw controls 14-to-5. Turnovers hurt UMass as the Minutewomen gave away 16 to just six for Dartmouth.
Colleen Speth made her second start in net for UMass making a total of six saves. Julie Wadland (2 saves, 44 minutes) and Chelsea Kirk (0 saves, 16 minutes) split time in cage for Dartmouth.
