GREENSBURG, Pa. - UMass baseball (2-6, 0-2 A-10) kicked off the Atlantic 10 portion of its schedule on Friday afternoon by dropping a twin-bill to the Duquesne Dukes (5-10, 2-0 A-10), 2-0 and 6-2, at Marc Marizzaldi Park. The Dukes got two strong starting pitching performances by Ryan Juran and Paul Bugajski, as they combined to allow only one UMass run in 16 innings pitched. Adam Tempesta (Brockton, Mass.) had the top day at the plate for the Minutemen, going 3-8 with a double. Brian Baudinet (Watertown, Conn.) homered in the second game, the first of the sophomore outfielder's career. After Thursday's game was postponed due to field conditions, the series was moved to the artificial turf surface on the Seton Hill University campus. The teams will conclude their three-game set on Saturday at noon.
Game-one was a pitching duel, as Mitchell Clegg (Woburn, Mass.) went seven strong innings, allowing two runs on five hits while striking out 10 batters. He was outdone however, by Juran, who pitched a complete game five hit shutout to get the win for the Dukes. Both teams finished with five hits and one error, but only Duquesne was able to push runs across the plate.
Duquesne scored its first run in the top of the second. Brian Bernardo's one-out bunt single preceded an Andrew Heck walk that gave the Dukes men at first and second. After a groundout that advanced the runners, Anthony Manley walked to load the bases. Clegg was then called for a balk that allowed Bernardo to score with the game's first run.
The Dukes added another run in the third, started off by an Aaron Janusey double to left field to leadoff the inning. With one out, Bill Torre stroked a single to left that scored Janusey and gave Duquesne the 2-0 lead that would stand up for the duration of the game.
Tempesta was 2-4 with a double to lead the Minutemen at the plate in game one. Mitchell Eilenberg (Brooklyn, N.Y.) relieved Clegg in the eighth, pitching a perfect frame.
UMass struck first in game-two by manufacturing a run in the top of the second inning. Mike Donato (East Hartford, Conn.) led off with a walk and was moved over by a Bryan Garrity (Peabody, Mass.) sacrifice bunt. Garrett Glashoff (Buchanon, N.Y.) followed with a single and Andy Tuetken (Smithfield, R.I.) drew a walk to load the bases. With two outs, Baudinet earned an RBI by drawing his team-leading ninth walk of the season to force in Donato with UMass' first run.
Duquesne got that run back in the bottom half of the inning with a leadoff home run by Mark Tracy. The Dukes got two more runs in the fourth, by getting two two-out singles followed up by an Anthony Manley double that scored both runners and gave Duquesne a 3-1 lead. It was the same story in the sixth inning, when with runners on first and second with two outs, Manley doubled again to drive in both runners. He later scored an unearned run on an error to put the Dukes on top, 6-1.
The Minutemen got a run back in the eighth when Baudinet led the inning off with his first career round-tripper. He finished 1-2 in the game with two walks and drove in both UMass runs.
Bryan Leigh (Somerset, Mass.) took the loss for UMass, going six innings and allowing five earned runs on nine hits. Nathan Monroy (Flemington, N.J.) came out of the bullpen to toss two shutout innings and strike out three batters.
