GREENSBURG, Pa. - UMass baseball (2-7, 0-3 A-10) closed its Atlantic 10 opening series at Duquesne (6-10, 3-0 A-10) with a 5-2 loss on Saturday afternoon at Marc Marizzaldi Park on the campus of Seton Hill University. The Minutemen scored a run in the first and second innings, but the Dukes scored four runs over the course of the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings before the came was called with two outs in the bottom of the seventh due to snow. Duquesne outhit the Minutemen, 9-3, while UMass committed five errors. The Minutemen return to action on Monday, when they conclude their season-opening 10 game roadtrip at Connecticut. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m.
Grant Gillespie pitched six innings, allowing one earned run on three hits to earn the victory for Duquesne. Jared Freni (Malden, Mass.) went five innings for UMass, surrendering two earned runs on five hits and walked seven. Mike Gedman (Framingham, Mass.) had the top day at the plate for the Minutemen, going 2-3 with a run scored. Kyle Multner (Peabody, Mass.) accounted for the other UMass hit, while Adam Tempesta (Brockton, Mass.) and Cody Kauffman (Blue Bell, Pa.) each drove in a run. Aaron Janusey was 3-3 for the Dukes, with a home run and two RBI.
UMass struck first in the top of the first when Ryan Franczek (Chicopee, Mass.) reached on an error, advanced to third on a wild pitch, and scored on Tempesta's groundout to shortstop.
After Duquesne got that run back in the bottom of the first, the Minutemen tacked on another in the second inning. Gedman reached with a bunt single and Bryan Garrity (Peabody, Mass.) followed with a walk. A balk by Gillespie moved the runners to second and third, allowing another groundout to shortstop, this time by Kauffman, to score a run.
In the bottom of the fifth, Janusey used a bunt single and a wild pitch to reach second base, where he was driven in by a Bryan Carroll's single. Carroll would later score on an Andrew Heck single to left-center.
Janusey would continue to fuel the Duquesne offense, his one-out solo home run in the sixth gave the Dukes a 4-2 lead and in the seventh he tripled to drive in Anthony Manley with the team's fifth run.
It was at that time the umpires called the game due to snow.
