TAMPA, Fla. - On Sunday, the UMass Minutemen defeated the Army Black Knights, 1-0 in game one of the doubleheader scheduled for the day. As a result of Saturday's rain delay, game one was scheduled to be seven innings. However, both teams were unable to score after seven and the game was sent into an extra innings. In the top of the eighth with two outs, Freshman Kyle Multner (Peabody, Mass.) knocked a game-winning single into shallow right field to score Ryan Franczek (Chicopee, Mass.). UMass improves to 1-3 on the season, while Army falls to 2-10.
Mitchell Clegg (Woburn, Mass.) made his second appearance of the season for the Minutemen. Clegg lasted an impressive 5 1/3 innings giving up only three hits to the Black Knights. Mitchell Eilenberg (Brooklyn, N.Y.) entered the game in the sixth inning and finished off the game for UMass allowing only one hit and striking out three.
Both teams had multiple chances to take the lead throughout the seven innings. UMass had their first opportunity in the first inning when Brain Baudinet (Watertown, Conn.) hit a single and then stole second. However, Adam Tempesta (Brockton, Mass.) flied out to centerfield and Jim Macdonald (Cheshire, Conn.) grounded out to second base to end the inning. Army had their chance to score first in the bottom of the first when Andy Ernesto singled to shortstop. Cole White reached on a fielder's choice, but the inning ended with Ernesto being thrown out at second base.
In the second, Mike Donato (East Hartford, Conn.) led the inning off with a walk followed by Bryan Garrity (Peabody, Mass.) grounding out to the pitcher on a sac bunt to advance Donato to second. Donato was unable to score after Garrett Glashoff (Buchanon, N.Y.) grounded out to second base and Andy Tuetken (Smithfield, R.I.) was out at first base. Army had another opportunity in the bottom of the second when Kevin McKague singled to centerfield. Kyle Stramara reached on a fielder's choice, but McKague was out at second. Stramara then stole second, but Caleb Love lined out to right field to end the inning.
In the bottom of the sixth, Eilenberg entered the game after Tony Capozzi grounded out to third base. Eilenberg walked Clint Moore, but then struck out Ernesto. Moore managed to steal second base, but the inning ended when White grounded out at first.
The Minutemen were looking to finally take the lead in seventh after Garrity led off the inning with a single up the middle. He was quickly eliminated on a failed sacrifice bunt attempt by Glasoff. Tuetken then walked to placed runners at first and second with one out. Army's Clothier picked off the lead runner, Multner, who entered the game as a pinch-runner for Glasoff. Andrew Black (Baltimore, Md.) followed with a walk, which called for Tyler Anderegg to be summonsed from the bullpen for the Black Knights. Anderegg retired Baudinet on a pop out to second base to escape the jam. In the bottom of the seventh, Army had their shot when Kevin McKague doubled to left center with two outs. Army fell short when Stramara grounded out to the pitcher to end the seventh and force extra innings.
UMass led off the eighth inning with Franczek reaching base on an infield error. A single through the left side of the infield by Tempesta placed runners at first and second with no outs. Anderegg then struck out MacDonald for the first out of the inning, but an errant pickoff throw to second base allowed both runners to move into scoring position. Donato then walked to load the bases, but Ben Kessel (Richboro, Pa.) then struck out for the second out. Multner was up next and lifted a flare into shallow right field to then deliver Franczek with the game-winning run. Stramara then threw out Tempesta at home plate on the play for the final out of the inning.
After scoring the lone run in the game, UMass entered the bottom of the eighth looking to earn their first win of the season. Eilenberg first faced Love who struck out. Capozzi was up next who flied out to right field. With two out in the bottom of the eighth, Moore was the last chance for the Black Knights. The gamed ended with Moore who flied out to center field.
Eilenberg received the win to improve to 1-1 on the season, while Anderegg fell to 0-1 on the season.
