Box Score

TAMPA, Fla. - The UMass Minutemen (2-3) wrapped up Sunday's doubleheader with a 7-1 win over the Army Black Knights (2-11). Pitchers Bryan Leigh (Somerset, Mass.) and Mike Dicato (Winthrop, Mass.) combined to limit the Black Knights to just one hit over nine innings. Leigh pitched a gem for the Minutemen allowing only one hit in the fifth inning. Mike Donato (East Harford, Conn.) went 3-for-4 with three runs batted in, while Brian Baudinet (Watertown, Conn.) added three hits to lead the Minutemen to victory.

After coming off a 1-0 win in game one of the doubleheader, the Minutemen looked to continue their winning streak in game two. UMass came out strong in the first inning with leadoff singles by Baudinet and Ryan Franczek (Chicopee, Mass.). Army pitcher Ben Koenigsfeld struck out Adam Tempesta (Brockton, Mass.), but Jim Macdonald (Cheshire, Conn.) was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Donato ripped a two-run single through the left side of the infield, to give UMass an early 2-0 lead. UMass was then able to execute a double-steal with Donato talking second and MacDonald taking home for a 3-0 lead. The inning ended with Kyle Multner (Peabody, Mass.) hitting a two-out RBI single to right field to end the inning with a 4-0 lead.

UMass pitcher Bryan Leigh allowed only one hit and one unearned run throughout eight innings of work. In the fifth inning, Army's Mike Greco hit a double over the head of Multner in left field with two outs and the Black Knights' only hit of the game. Kyle Stramara followed with a ground ball to first base that was mishandled by first baseman Mike Gedman (Framingham, Mass.) for an error allowing Greco to score Army's lone run.

UMass added on two more runs in the seventh and eight innings. Donato doubled to left field to score Tempesta in the seventh, while Baudinet singled to left field to score Multner in the eighth.

Mike Dicato took to the mound in the ninth for Leigh. Cody Shorter and Sean Rainbird earned two-out walks against Dicato, but Kevin McKague grounded out to end the game.

Leigh (1-0) pick up his first win of the season after striking out four and walking two on the day. Koenigsfeld (1-3) dropped his third game of the season after giving up seven hits and five.

UMass will look to finish the sweep of Army tomorrow when the Minutemen face the Black Knights for the final game of the series. First pitch is set for 3 p.m at the Yankees minor league complex.
