BRONX, N.Y. - Despite playing a scoreless first half, the UMass women's soccer team suffered a 3-0 setback to Fordham in Atlantic 10 action on Sunday afternoon. The Minutewomen now hold a 6-7-4 record on the year, 3-5-1 in the A-10, while the Rams improve to 10-4-2, 7-1-1 in A-10 matches.
With the squads deadlocked at 0-0, Fordham put its first tally on the board in the 62nd minute as Michelle Ancelj's strike from 15 yards out found the back of the net off a feed from Catherine Huvane.
The Rams then increased their advantage to 2-0 at 68:43 when Alexis Ribadeneyra bent in a right-footed corner kick into the far corner of the goal past junior Lauren Luckey.
The third and final goal came at 84:41. Following a Fordham free kick, Courtney Fedge collected a rebound from 10 yards out and logged her second of the season.
"We played a pretty good first half and hung in there with them," said UMass Head Coach Jim Rudy. "Their first goal was a fortuitous one and I felt like we were still in it, but the second broke our back. They carried most of the play and it basically came down to our inability to establish possession in their defending third. It's the best Fordham team I've seen in my years of coaching. I am proud of our kids, though. They battled to the very end trying to get a goal."
Freshman Meghan Collins, redshirt senior Vanessa Lima, senior Amy Ballew and sophomore Therese Smith managed a shot apiece for UMass, none of which were placed on target. Luckey registered seven saves on 17 shots taken by the Rams.
Corner kicks were 5-2 in favor of Fordham, while fouls were 7-4 against the Rams.
The Minutewomen will be back in action on Friday, Oct. 31, when the team will return to Rudd Field to play host to Saint Louis in an Atlantic 10 match that is slated for 3 p.m.
