Construction workers broke ground Monday morning on the new grandstand seats being erected at the UMass Softball Complex. The new bleachers will accommodate about 400 fans comfortably behind home plate and are slated to be complete by the first home game of the 2008 Softball season against Dartmouth on March 26.
Angled so that everyone can see the plays, the new bleachers will stretch from dugout to dugout and rise high above the playing field. Behind home plate and in two sections of bench seating, 101 chairback seats will be installed to further comfort viewers.
"We will now have a championship-caliber facility, giving us the opportunity to host NCAA Regional and Super Regional events," Head Coach Elaine Sortino said. "The field will have a stadium feel, with seating that is 30 feet high."
The Minutewomen begin the 2008 season against Michigan on Feb. 8 at the Dunkin Donuts Classic in Boca Raton, Fla.
