Amhest, Mass -
The UMass Women's Soccer spring season is underway. The Minutewomen won the UMass/Allsport Indoor Tournament. Held March 3, the tournament was UMass's first action of the spring. The Minutewomen played to a 1-1 tie in its first game of the day versus the UMass Alumnae team. A very exciting and fast paced game, it featured goals by Alum Lindsay Fairweather and sophomore Vanessa Patry. Patry's goal came against current Assistant Coach Angela Napoli. UMass then played the University of Albany, Pace and Long Island University, putting 11 goals in the back of the net while conceding only one goal against. In the championship game, a rematch with the Alumnae team, Britt Canfield, Vanessa Patry and Christina Nunes scored to give the Minutewomen a 3-1 victory.
Patry led the Minutewomen in scoring over the course of the tournament with four goals and five assists. Sydney Stoll and Christina Adams each recorded three goals and one assist. In net, Kristin Walker allowed only two goals over 59 minutes played. Lauren Luckey played 36 minutes with one goal against and Melissa Jubinville contributed 26 minutes of shut-out goalkeeping. Patry, Stoll, Kaelyn Caldwell and Angela Napoli were all named to the All-Tournament Team.
Coach Jim Rudy was very happy with his team's performance in the tournament. "First off, our players received considerable playing time and all three keepers competed. Secondly, there's been an emphasis on attack in every training session. We scored a lot of goals...Overall right now I'm a very proud coach."
In other action so far this spring, UMass took on the Japanese Women's All-Star team, soundly winning 6-1 on March 14. Next, the Minutewomen hit the road for a game against Holy Cross in Worcester on April 14. The following weekend, UMass will travel to Epping, New Hampshire, playing for the Seacoast United College Spring Tournament. Games on tap include match-ups against UNH and St. Anselm's.
Other games this spring include matches on April 28 with UMass-Lowell and the UMass Alumnae team; both are at home. On May 5, the Minutewomen will be competing in the 5th annual SoccerFest, a tournament held by the UMass Sport Management Department. They will take on the New England Mutiny, a professional women's soccer team of the Women's Premier Soccer League.
