Box Score

CHARLOTTE, NC - Starting pitcher Chris Lloyd (North Adams, Mass.) pitched eight strong innings, but it wasn't enough, as the UMass Minutemen (4-9, 2-2) were out-dueled by Adam Mills and the Charlotte 49ers (20-5, 3-1) on Friday afternoon, 3-1. Two unearned runs were the difference as Lloyd (1-2) put together UMass' best starting effort of the year, allowing only one earned run on seven hits and striking out two Charlotte batters. Mills (7-1) threw a complete game five-hitter for the 49ers, giving up one run and fanning five Minutemen.

Charlotte wasted no time getting on the board. After a fly out to lead off the bottom of the first, Aaron Bray reached first on a throwing error. A single and a fielder's choice would follow, and Lane would eventually score the game's first run on a Chris Taylor single.

Lloyd gave up his only earned run of the game in the bottom of the third when Chris Lane sent his 2-1 offering over the left field fence to lead of the inning.

The 49ers would strike again in the fourth. Brad McElroy led the inning of with a double, advanced to third on a passed ball, and scored on a Spencer Steedley ground out to shortstop to make the score 3-0.

The Minutemen got on the scoreboard in the in the eighth when Jim Mcdonald (Cheshire, Conn.) led off the inning by taking Mills' first pitch deep down the left field line for his second home run of the season. It was also his team-leading thirteenth RBI.

Things got interesting in the ninth when UMass managed to bring the tying run to the plate when Bryan Adamski (South Deerfield, Mass.) stroked a two-out double to left-center. The threat was stymied however, when Mills forced a ground ball out of Bryan Garrity (Peabody, Mass.) to end the game at 3-1.

Macdonald was 2-3 on the day for UMass, adding a double to go along with his home run.

Adamski singled in the fourth and was 2-4.

Adam Tempesta (Brockton, Mass.) singled in the first for the Minutemen and was 1-4.
