AMHERST, Mass. - Three University of Massachusetts women's soccer players were recognized on Wednesday, as the Atlantic 10 handed out their postseason awards. In voting by the league's sports information directors, senior Kaelyn Caldwell was named to her third-straight Academic All-Conference team. The league's head coaches voted senior Britt Canfield and junior Vanessa Patry as Honorable Mention All-Conference honorees. Caldwell sports a tremendous grade point average as a psychology major, while Canfield finished the season with a team-leading 26 points (8g, 10a), and Patry picked up 12 (4g, 4a).
For Caldwell, this marks her third consecutive season making the Academic All-Conference Team. On the field, she scored her first-career goal this season on Oct. 7 at Xavier, while dishing out assists against Rhode Island (Oct. 13) and George Washington (Nov. 4). The psychology major has also won numerous other academic awards. Recently, she was named to ESPN The Magazine's Academic All-District First Team. She is now qualified to be named College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSida) Academic All-America.
Canfield finished her UMass career as one of the top offensive players in school history. She finished with 77 points, good for eighth all-time, and 30 goals, good for a tenth place tie. Her ten assists this season were six more than her previous career-high, and also tied for fifth most in UMass single-season history. As a senior, she was named Atlantic 10 Player of the Week twice, and UMass Athlete of the Week once.
Patry recorded the most points of her career this season, tallying 12 via four goals and four assists. She scored UMass' last goal of the season on Sunday vs. George Washington, a shot that gave the Minutewomen a 2-1 lead late in the second half. Her three other goals were also at home: vs. Hartford (Sept. 16), vs. Duquesne (Sept. 30), and vs. Rhode Island (Oct. 13). This marks the first time Patry has been honored by the A-10. Last season, she was named a third team all-Northeast region pick by SoccerBuzz.com.
The Mintewomen concluded their season 9-6-2, their second straight winning season. Stay updated with UMassAthletics.com throughout the off-season for news and feature stories as the team looks towards to 2008.
