UMass Swimming And Diving Teams Split Against Army

The UMass Women's Swimming and Diving team swam to a 164-136 win over Army this afternoon while the men's squad fell just short of the win 165-135. The Minutewomen improve to 2-1 on the season in dual meets, while the men fall to 1-2 on the season.
Both the men's and women's teams scored early in the meet taking first and third in the 200 medley relay. The Minutewomen had excellent balance throughout day between individual victories in the swimming events and the diving events. Sophomore Elizabeth Walsh (Marshfield, Mass.) and junior Christa Narus (Stony Brook, N.Y.) paced the Minutewomen with two first place finishes each. Walsh claimed first in the 100-yard backstroke (1:00.25) and 200-yard backstroke (2:11.19) while Narus took first in the 100-yard butterfly (59.32) and 200-yard butterfly (2:07.13). Narus also swam to a second place finish in the 200-yard freestyle (1:56.22). In the 100-yard breaststroke the Minutewomen saw stellar performances from their freshman as Jessica Starosielec (Colonia, N.J.) took second place (1:10.25), Tavis Potter (Stillwater, Minn.) took third (1:10.87) and Meghan Nowak (Medway, Mass.) finished fourth (1:11.58).
The women's diving squad claimed first and second place finishes in the one-meter and three-meter dives from junior Karen Upperco (Titusville, N.J.) and freshman Anne Fogerty (Allentown, Penn.) respectively. Upperco posted a score of 239.40 in the one-meter dive and a 262.80 in the three-meter dive. Fogerty scored a 229.27 in the three-meter dive and a 257.77 in the three-meter dive.
In men's action, Reuben Rappe (Farmington, Minn.) swept in the one-meter (294.45) and three-meter (306.97) diving events. Freshamn Adam Duffield (Brookfield, Conn.) tallied a third place finish (213.82) in the one-meter dive and freshman Zach Lichter (Weston, Mass.) posted third in the three-meter dive (216.15) and fourth in the one-meter dive.
The Minutemen were led by first place finishes from freshman Max Butler (Duxbury) in the 100-yard backstroke (53.44), sophomore Juan Moliere (San Juan, P.R.) in the 50-yard freestyle (21.79), sophomore Nate Bromage (Three Rivers, Mass.) in the 100-yard butterfly (51.58), and freshman Mike Berthaume (Hampden, Mass.) in the 200-yard butterfly.
Freshman Trevor Ziegler (Clarksville, M.D.) scored for the men's squad finishing third in both the 100-yard backstroke (54:01) and the 200-yard backstroke (1:56.88).
Army showed it was a well-rounded program taking first, second, and third place in men's 1000-yard freestyle and the men's 100-yard breaststroke.
Both teams will break for two weeks before facing Binghamton on Nov. 11 in Binghamton, N.Y.
