AMHERST, Mass. - Fifth-year track & field senior Jon Korhonen (Gardner, Mass.) has been named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Third Team as announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) this week. This is the second consecutive year that he has earned Academic All-American status as he was named to the 2004-05 second team as well.

Korhonen produced a stellar career at UMass on the track, in the classroom, and as a part of the University community at large. He was a four-year letterwinner on the track team, a three-year drum major for the UMass Marching Band, and held a 3.95 grade point average in his communication major. Earlier this summer he was named to the Academic All-District I team alongside fellow teammate Matt Clark.

Just prior to graduation, Korhonen was named as one-of-15 21st Century Leaders by the University which recognizes students who are academically accomplished and have contributed to the University by exceptional achievement or have enhanced the reputation of the campus.

Athletically, he saved some of his best running for his last season as he became the all-time fastest miler in UMass history during the past indoor season at the Boston University Valentine Invitational. His time of 4:04.26 is the fastest indoor mile time in school history breaking the previous 25-year standing record. Also this indoor season, he finished second in the 3,000 meters at the A-10 Indoor Championships posting the team's fastest time of the season in the event.

The Gardner, Mass., native has twice been named the UMass Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year (2004-05 & 2005-06) and was named the A-10 Indoor Track Scholar-Athlete of the Year in 2004-05.

To be eligible for ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American honors, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be a first-team member of an Academic All-District team. Since the program's inception in 1952, CoSIDA has bestowed Academic All-America honors on more than 14,000 student-athletes in Divisions I, II, III and NAIA covering all NCAA championship sports.

Other UMass student-athletes who have been honored this past academic year include Jackie Nesbitt of the women's lacrosse team, Lauren Proctor of the softball team, Michele Spiess of the tennis team, and Katelyn Woolfrey of the field hockey team.
