Owls Silence UMass 15-2 On Sunday

AMHERST, Mass. - The Massachusetts baseball team (10-22, 8-10 Atlantic 10) fell to Temple (9-31, 3-13 A-10) by the score 15-2 on Sunday afternoon. Temple iced the game away with a seven-run seventh inning, marking their highest single-inning run total of the season. The UMass offense was held in check by Owl starter Tom Dolan, who limited the Minutemen to just three hits over his seven-inning stint. Freshman Jim Macdonald (Cheshire, Conn.) hit his first career home run in the loss.

Clinging to a 3-2 lead, Temple exploded for seven in the seventh inning to pull away with the 15-2 victory. The Owls got their first three runs on a RBI singles by Dan Brady and Lenny DelGrippo and a walk issued to Pat Riley. John Coyle cleared the bases with a grand slam to right center field opening up the Temple lead to 10-2. The Owls would add five in the eighth for the final of 15-2.

The Owls took the opening lead in the first inning, plating one run on a RBI single by Devon Swope. Temple tacked on another run in the top of the third as Brady stroked a solo home run to right center field making it 2-0. Brady swung a hot bat throughout the series, finishing 9-15 with five runs and eight RBI.

The Owls extended their lead to 3-0 in the top half of the fifth. Brady drilled a one-out double to left center field and Swope followed with a RBI double, scoring Brady. Swope was 4-5 on the day with two RBI and two runs scored.

Owl starter Tom Dolan cruised through the first four frames holding the Minutemen hitless while allowing just two walks. Macdonald ended the no-hitter and the shutout with one swing of the bat, blasting his first career home run. The solo shot cut the Owl lead to 3-1.

Dolan pitched well in his seven-inning outing allowing just three hits and two runs while striking out eight Minutemen in the win, improving to 2-3 on the year. Minuteman starter Chris Lloyd took the loss, working six innings allowing four runs on seven hits while striking out three as he fell to 0-3.

The Minutemen got another run in the bottom half of the sixth on a RBI single by Bryan Garrity (Peabody, Mass.), pulling the Minutemen within one at 3-2.
