UMass Rowing Wins 11th A-10 Championship In Row

PENNSAUKEN, N.J. - The UMass rowing team captured its 11th straight Atlantic 10 championship on a rainy Saturday at the Cooper River in Pennsauken, N.J. The Minutewomen won four of the nine events to take the title with 45 points. It is the longest active championship streak among all A-10 teams in all sports. Saint Joseph's finished second with 33 points, Dayton was third with 30 points and Rhode Island was fourth with 29 points.
UMass won the quad, the lightweight four, the second novice eight, and the second varsity eight.
The quad beat second place Rhode Island by almost 25 seconds with a winning time of 8:49.9. Catherine Gariepy, Hannah Brewster, Ellen Maskrey, and Stephanie Hopf comprised the gold medal winning boat. This marked the ninth straight year that UMass has won the quad.
The lightweight four defeated second place Dayton by over 20 seconds, finishing in 9:58.0. The boat consisted of rowers Annie Malinkevich, Michelle Woodford, Abby Lively, and Melissa Kelly and coxswain Amber Monson. It was third time in 11 years that UMass has won the lightweight four, and the first time since 2001.
UMass beat second place Fordham by almost a minute in the second novice eight final. The Minutewomen crossed the line in 9:37.8, compared to the Rams' time of 10:31.1 The second novice eight featured Ashley Maroney, Emily Reynolds, Emma Einhorn, Erin Kelly, Andrea Hoey, Rachel Ebner, Brittany Cartin, Elizabeth Short, and coxswain Benna Cheung. It was the fifth time UMass won the second novice eight and first time since 1999.
The second varsity eight won a very tight race. The Minutewomen finished in 8:43.8. Dayton was second (8:50.6), Fordham was third (8:52.4), and George Washington was fourth (8:57.9). UMass' rowers included Kristen Boyce, Jaime Dicke, Faith Miller, Amanda Mawn, Kate Grogan, Allison Bahn, Elizabeth Hayashida, and Farrell Klein. The boat was coxed by Natalie Salerno. It was the ninth time UMass has won the second varsity eight and the first since 2003.
UMass' novice four finished third, first novice eight was fifth, the varsity four was third, and the varsity eight was fourth.
UMass will row next Saturday, April 29, at Princeton, N.J., against Tennessee, George Washington, and Princeton.
