AMHERST, Mass. - The UMass women's soccer team dropped its second straight game, losing 3-1 on Friday afternoon. Nadia Villarroel scored the lone goal for the Minutewomen, who fall to 7-4-0 on the season, 1-2 in the Atlantic 10. They next host Xavier on Sunday afternoon at Rudd Field. Game time is set for 12 Noon.
The Minutewomen got on the board first as senior Nadia Villarroel put home a rebound after a scramble in front of the net. The goal came at the 12:34 mark of the first half.
Dayton answered right back less than ten minutes later, as they tied the score at one. Amanda Gallow collected a pass from Colleen Gibson and was able to put it by Kristin Walker. The score remained tied heading in to halftime.
Dayton started the second half quickly, as Caitlin Proffitt cleaned up a blocked shot at the 50:43 mark to take a 2-1 lead.
The half continued with numerous scoring chances by both teams, but both goaltenders came up big. Walker made seven saves on the day, while Tasha Dittamore recorded six for Dayton.
Dayton put the game away at the 74:27 mark as Mandi Back came in clean on net and beat Walker far post.
Head Coach Jim Rudy praised Dayton's play after the match. "Dayton is always on top of the conference. They have a great winning tradition. They organized well and played well."
Ultimately though, the Minutewomen didn't finish their scoring opportunities.
"If you don't put away your chances against Dayton, you will pay the price," Rudy said. "And we did."
