Women's Soccer Continues Playoff Push On Sunday

AMHERST, Mass. - The UMass women's soccer team (10-4-0, 4-2-0 A-10) returns home this weekend for a match on Sunday vs. Rhode Island. Sunday is also Senior Day and game time is set for 1 p.m. Nadia Villarroel, Stephanie Barrett, and Elizabeth Weinsten will be honored prior to the match. The Minutewomen look to continue their winning ways as they defeated Saint Joseph's and Temple last weekend in Philadelphia. They currently stand in the sixth and final playoff spot in the Atlantic 10 with three games remaining.
Last weekend, the Minutewomen won two road matches to improve their conference record to 4-2-0. On Friday night, they topped Saint Joseph's, 2-0. They followed that by topping Temple 1-0 on a free kick by Stephanie Barrett. Goaltender Kristin Walker pitched a pair of shutouts and was named the UMass/Dinn Bros. Co-Athlete of the Week. The shutouts were her fifth, and sixth of the season. She has started all 14 games in 2006, posting a 0.95 goals against average up to this point.
The Minutewomen are led offensively by Britt Canfield, Nadia Villarroel, and Vanessa Patry. Canfield has recorded 15 points on six goals and three assists. Villarroel and Patry are tied for second on the team with ten points each.
The Rams come to town in first place in the A-10 with a 5-1-0 conference record, 9-8-0 overall. They are coming off a 4-2 loss to in-state rival Brown University on Wednesday. Their last A-10 match was a 2-1 victory over Saint Joseph's on October 15. In that game, senior Lauren Forgione scored the game winner with less than three minutes left in regulation.
On offense, the Rams are led by forward Deb Nelson. She has recorded 22 points on the season with nine goals and four assists. Freshman Amanda Thomas leads the Rams in net. She has started 13 games, posting a 1.39 GAA and a .773 save percentage.
