AMHERST, Mass. - Rudd Field is certainly home sweet home for the UMass Minutewomen soccer team after defeating Marist on Friday afternoon by the score of 3-0. Massachusetts is 2-0 at home this season, as they also defeated Hartford by the same score a week ago today. Kristin Walker earned her sixth career shutout, turning away all four shots on goal.
Senior co-captain Lindsey Bellini was credited with the gamewinner for UMass, making good on a penalty kick 17:58 into the game. Britt Canfield was the Minutewoman taken down for the kick. The goal was Bellini's first of the season.
Sophomore Nadia Villarroel scored her second goal in as many games, opening up a 2-0 lead 16:35 into the second half. Rookie Vanessa Patry headed the ball past the Red Fox defense to Villarroel, who kicked it off Anna Case's hands into the lower right corner of the goal.
Canfield, who had a team-high four shots in the match, made it a three-goal game 14:10 later. Patry sent a through ball to Canfield, who dribbled up the field and shot the ball to the inside upper right corner. The goal was also Canfield's first of the season.
Overall, UMass made 17 shots compared to Marist's eight. Corner kicks were five to three in favor of the Minutewomen.
Walker commented on the team's outlook post-game, saying, "We've been doing a lot of talking, making sure we keep our heads in the game. Our team came into preseason with a lot of confidence, making a complete 180 this season."
Patry said, "It is definitely a confidence boost, going up 2-0 on the season at home. The 2-1 loss (to Boston University) hurt us as they dominated the game, but a 3-0 win at home says a lot."
The Minutewomen return to action next week when they play Connecticut in the UConn Classic. The Sept. 9 game will begin at 7 p.m. in Storrs, Conn. UMass will then face St. John's on Sunday at 11:30 a.m.
