Boston - University of Massachusetts hockey player Peter Trovato joined Boston Celtics captain Paul Pierce and Dallas Mavericks guard Michael Finley at center court of the FleetCenter before the March 30th home game between the Boston Celtics vs. Dallas Mavericks. Trovato was honored by the Boston Celtics as a local hero, as part of the team's "Heroes Among Us" program.
Trovato founded the Massachusetts Soldiers Legacy Fund, a college scholarship program for kids of Massachusetts' soldiers who have died in Iraq or Afghanistan. While balancing his academic schedule and the commitment of being a Division I college hockey player at UMass, Trovato has managed to raise $50,000 through this program.
Trovato is one of 5 finalists for the 2005 Hockey Humanitarian Award. To date, his fund has supported more than 20 children of the 30 Massachusetts soldiers who have died.
The "Heroes Among Us" award is presented to an individual or individuals who, through their unique commitment and humanitarian spirit, have made exceptional and lasting contributions to our community. At each home game since the program's inception, the Celtics and their fans have saluted the exemplary efforts of these citizens during a special in-game presentation on the team's legendary parquet floor. To date, more than 300 individuals have received the "Heroes Among Us" Award.
A charter member of the Basketball Association of America (which evolved into the National Basketball Association) since 1946, the Boston Celtics have won a record 16 NBA Championships, including eight (8) in a row from 1959-1966, and have won NBA titles in three different eras. In addition, 29 former Celtics players, management or staff have been inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. For more information about the Celtics, log onto www.celtics.com.
