New Orleans, La. - The Massachusetts Minutemen lost to New Orleans in their season opener, 3-2, on a bases loaded walk in the bottom of the ninth.
The Minutemen went into the ninth leading 2-1. The Privateers (2-5) led off the ninth with a double by Patrick Rose. A bunt single created a first-and-third situation, then Josh Jones stole second base. Jason Schwab singled up the middle to score Rose and even the game at 2-2. Freshman Jason Lavorgna (North Haven, Conn.) intentionally walked the next batter to load the bases. Freshman Chris Sargoy (Los Angeles, Calif.) then came on in relief, and on a full count, walked in the winning run.
Junior Matt Torra (Pittsfield, Mass.) threw seven scoreless innings for the Minutemen, but left with a no decision.
The two teams play their second game of a three game series on Saturday at 2:00 PM.
