NEWARK, Del. - Sophomore Pam Rosanio (Southampton, Pa.) scored a game-high 18 points, but the Massachusetts women's basketball team (0-1) dropped its season opener, 71-44, at Delaware (1-0). The Minutewomen committed 24 turnovers and shot 33 percent for the game. UMass had more free throws (15) than field goals (14) and were just 1-for-14 from behind the arc.

Delaware closed out the first half on a 16-2 run after leading 15-13 at the 7:57 mark to take a 31-15 halftime lead. It took advantage of 13 UMass turnovers and shot 48 percent from the field. The Minutewomen, meanwhile, shot just 21 percent from the field and scored only four points in the final 10:29 of the half. Delaware attempted 10 more shots than UMass. The Minutewomen were unable to get into an offensive rhythm in the first half as they shot 0-for-8 from three-point range. UMass scored seven of its 15 first-half points from the free throw line as the Blue Hens committed 12 fouls.

Delaware went up by 20 points early in the second half, before a 9-2 UMass run cut the deficit to 13 points, 39-26, at the 15:36 mark. Rosanio scored eight points during the run. The Blue Hens came right back and extended the lead to 20 points with a 10-3 spurt in the next two minutes. UMass was unable to get back in the game and trailed by as many as 29 points late.

UMass was 14-for-43 (.326) from the field, while the Blue Hens were 29-for-55 (.527). The Minutewomen were also 1-for-14 from three-point range and out-rebounded, 33-28. Junior Tamara Tatham (Brampton, Ontario) and sophomore Kate Mills (Elkton, Md.) each added eight points. Tatham grabbed nine boards, while Mills had six.

Freshmen Sakera Young (Glassboro, N.J.) and Stefanie Gerardot (Fort Wayne, Ind.) both made their collegiate debuts. Young had an assist and a rebound in 11 minutes, while Gerardot had a steal in three minutes.

Alena Koshansky led Delaware with 14 points. Karleena Tobin added 12, while Tyresa Smith had 11 and Amanda Blackstone had 10.

Massachusetts will host Holy Cross on Sunday at the Mullins Center in its home opener. Tip-off is slated for 2:00 PM.
