UMass Varsity Eight Ranked Second In Mid-Atlantic Region

Amherst, Mass. - With a strong showing against fifth ranked Brown this past weekend, the UMass varsity eight boat is now ranked second in the Mid-Atlantic region, trailing only Princeton in the NCAA Division I Rowing regional poll. The poll is the first of the season and was released on April 11, 2004.
UMass' varsity eight is now 5-1 on the season. The Minutewomen have defeated Rhode Island, New Hampshire, Columbia, Holy Cross, and Rutgers. Brown edged UMass by less than five seconds last weekend, finishing the race in a time of 6:30.84, compared to the Minutewomen's 6:35.34.
The varsity eight is comprised of coxswain Carrie Champigny (senior; Danvers, Mass.), stroke Hayley McGrath (senior; Florence, Mass.), seventh seat Lizzy Boyle (senior; Darien, Conn.), sixth seat Lea Jakobsen (junior; Copenhagen, Denmark), fifth seat Lauren Cromwell (senior; Missoula, Mont.), fourth seat Katie O'Brien (senior; Shutesbury, Mass.), third seat Stephanie Hopf (sophomore; Hadley, Mass.), second seat Faith Harkins (junior; Marion, Mass), and bow seat Catherine Gariepy (sophomore; Lorraine, Quebec).
The UMass women's rowing team is next in action, April 17-18, at the Knecht Cup in Collingswood, N.J. The Knecht Cup features over 20 colleges and universities. For a complete schedule of races, please see the story on the Knecht Cup.
Coach Jim Dietz' team will be looking for its ninth straight Atlantic 10 championship on April 24.
