BRIDGEPORT, Conn. - The University of Massachusetts baseball team (7-7) knocked off the Sacred Heart (1-18) by the score of 9-2, this afternoon at Harbor Yard as freshman righthanded starter Devin Barnett (New Orleans, La.) went seven innings and allowed just six hits and two runs while striking out five en route to his first collegiate victory.
Sacred Heart jumped on the board first with a run in the second inning on a pair of back-to-back triples. Senior Ed Marotta (Bethpage, N.Y.) hit a triple to left center and was followed by an RBI triple to right center by freshman Rob Tenzca (Meriden, Conn.). UMass would answered with three runs in the top-half of the fourth inning courtesy a sac-fly by Matt Reynolds (South Boston, Mass.) and a two-run single by junior left fielder Curt Szado (Monson, Mass.) to make 3-1, Minutemen, mid-way through the fourth.
The Pioneers would get one back in bottom of the fifth inning as they loaded the bases with one out. Barnett struck out Jamie Schilkowski (Shelton, Conn.) looking for the second out but then hit Brian Rojee (Foxboro, Mass.) with an 0-2 pitch to force home a run. The first-year hurler would battle back inducing a foul fly to catcher Frank Curreri (Weymouth, Mass.) ending the inning and preserving the UMass lead.
Barnett stranded two more Pioneers on the basepaths in the sixth, retiring sophomore leadoff hitter Jason Maiella (North Haledon, N.J.) for the fourth time of the afternoon to end the inning. All told, Barnett, who started the day with 8.1 innings and six strikeouts all season, left eight Pioneers marooned on base.
The 3-2 UMass lead would hold until the Minutemen busted things open with five runs in the top of the eighth inning. A pair of Sacred Heart errors combined with five UMass hits put to this one away. Curreri, Szado, sophomore leftfielder Bill Rankin (Willington, Conn.) and junior rightfielder Jason Twomley (Fitchburg, Mass.) each notched an RBI.
Junior righthander Anthony Gallo (Peabody, Mass.) made his second appearance of the second and faced the minimum over the last two innings to close it out. In the process, he kept his 0.00 ERA intact.
Junior centerfielder Derrick Durepo (Ware, Mass.) got into the offensive attack as well collecting three hits including a double which turned out to be the lone UMass extra base hit. The Maroon and White pounded out 13 hits on the afternoon including 12 singles to mark the 10th time this season they have recorded a double-digit hit total.
UMass baseball returns to action this weekend with a home-opening series against Atlantic 10 Conference foe Richmond (14-10). A pair of seven inning games are scheduled for Saturday, Apr. 3, beginning at 12:00 p.m., with a single nine-inning game on tap for Sunday beginning at 12:00 p.m. All three contests will be broadcast live online through www.umassathletics.com.
