AMHERST, Mass. - Senior linebacker Mark Kimener (Oakton, Va.) of the football team and senior midfielder Michelle Luttati (Westford, Mass.) of the women's soccer team were named the 2003 UMass Fall Scholar-Athletes. Selection criteria included academic acheivement, athletic accomplishments and communtiy service. Kimener and Luttati will be honored at the Dec. 10 UMass Sports Luncheon, to be held in the Campus Center, room 1009.
Kimener led the team with 133 total tackles, as he started all 13 games at inside linebacker for the Minutemen. His 90 solo tackles also led the team, as did his 15 tackles for a loss of 54 yards. Kimener tied for second on the team in sacks with four for a loss of 22 yards, forced four fumbles, intercepted two passes, recorded two pass breakups and logged one quarterback hurry. Kimener was chosen Academic All-District 1, named a second-team All-Atlantic 10 selection and was picked as the UMass/Dinn Bros. Athlete of the Week for his performance against Hofstra on Oct. 18. Kimener has maintained a career 3.36 GPA, majoring in Sociology.
Luttati saw action in 16 games for the Minutewomen, making 15 starts. She scored two goals and tallied two assists for four points, as she played a key role in the UMass defense and midfield. Her headball goal against St. Bonaventure marked the game-winner on Senior Day, and her goal in the 89th minute against Temple sent the game into overtime. Named a second-team All-Atlantic 10 selection, Luttati maintains a 3.8 GPA as a Communications major, and has made the Dean's List every semester of her collegiate career.
This year marks the second that the university has honored one male and one female student-athlete in each season. At the end of the year, a Scholar-Athlete of the Year will be chosen from the seasonal winners.
