AMHERST, Mass. -- The University of Massachusetts women's tennis team downed St. John's, 4-3, this afternoon at the Upper Boyden Courts. The Minutewomen won the doubles point and three singles matches en route to the non-conference victory.
In doubles, the Minutewomen won the first and second matches to pick up the first point of the match. The No. 1 tandem of senior Helena Horak (Westlake Village, Calif.) and sophomore Susan Hyams (Cincinnati, Ohio) beat Nataliya Kostova and Tessa Lewis, 8-4. At No. 2, freshman Stephanie Price (Columbia, Mo.) and sophomore Jafra Depontes (Kaliua-Kona, Hawaii) breezed by Corina Cetateanu and Vera Epstathiou, 8-1. It was their seventh consecutive doubles win.
In singles, Massachusetts won the second, third and fourth matches to secure the victory. Price beat Lewis, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 at No. 2, while Horak was victorious over Cetateanu in straight sets at No. 3, 6-2, 6-3. Hyams topped Epstathiou at No. 4, 6-4, 7-5.
The Minutewomen will travel to Rhode Island for a key Atlantic 10 conference match tomorrow at 3:00 p.m. The match was rescheduled from April 3 due to rain.
