Women's Tennis Drops Amherst College, 5-4

AMHERST, Mass. -- The University of Massachusetts women's tennis team defeated cross-town rival Amherst College, 5-4, this afternoon at the Upper Boyden Courts. Massachusetts took two out of the three doubles points and split the singles matches with the Jeffs to secure the victory.
In doubles, the No. 1 tandem of senior Helena Horak (Westlake Village, Calif.) and sophomore Susan Hyams (Cincinnati, Ohio) dispatched Stephanie Fong and Heather Cole, 8-3. At No. 2, sophomore Jafra Depontes (Kaliua-Kona, Hawaii) and freshman Stephanie Price (Columbia, Mo.) downed Rachel Holt and Roopali Agarwal, 8-4. The win was the ninth in a row for the pair.
Price, Horak and Hyams each won their singles match to lead the Maroon & White to victory. Price beat Holt in a tiebreaker, 6-1, 7-6 (8-6) at No. 2, while Horak topped Cole, 7-6 (9-7), 6-2 at No. 3. At No. 4, Hyams breezed by Wallis Molchen, 6-1, 6-2. She has now won six of her last seven singles matches.
The Minutewomen will travel to Chestnut Hill, Mass., for an 11:00 a.m. match with Boston College on Saturday, April 13. UMass will play its final regular season dual match at the Upper Boyden Courts on Monday, April 15, at 3:00 p.m. when it hosts Quinnipiac. Horak, the squad's lone senior, will be recognized prior to the start of the match.
