TAMPA, Fla. - The University of Massachusetts baseball team dropped the third game of its series at South Florida 6-0 here on Sunday afternoon. With the loss, UMass falls to 1-2 on the season, while USF improves its record to 6-7.
After sophomore righthander Eric Chown (Fall River, Mass.) worked out of a jam in the second inning, South Florida took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third. Mike Cunningham doubled down the left field line to lead off the inning, and moved to third on a failed pickoff attempt by Chown. Chris Cuccia then singled to center field to put the Bulls ahead.
Chown finished the afternoon with five innings pitched, allowing just one run on three South Florida hits. After extending their lead to 2-0 in the bottom of the sixth, the Bulls added a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh on a Jeff Baisley single.
UMass continued to struggle offensively, as the Minutemen managed just five hits off starter Jason Bartz and none off relievers Jeremy Fortner and Joey Livingston. Junior designated hitter Chris Morgan (Cranston, R.I.), who continued to baffle South Florida pitchers, recorded UMass' only extra base hit of the afternoon, a lead off double in the top of the fourth.
The Minutemen will return to action next weekend as they open the home portion of their schedule on Saturday, March 9, when they welcome Quinnipiac to Earl Lorden Field. The two teams will play again on Sunday at Quinnipiac. First pitch for both contests is scheduled for 12:00 noon.
