Minutemen Blast Three Homers, Defeat Quinnipiac 10-3

AMHERST, Mass. - Senior righthander Jesse Santos (Chelmsford, Mass.) tossed seven scoreless innings to lead the University of Massachusetts baseball team to a 10-3 win over Quinnipiac at Earl Lorden Field on Saturday afternoon. The victory marked the 400th win of head coach Mike Stone's UMass career, and evened the Minuteman record at 2-2.
Quinnipiac (0-1) had a chance to get on the board early, but Santos worked out of a bases loaded jam in the top of the first inning. The game remained scoreless until a Cullan Maumus (New Orleans, La.) RBI single in the bottom of the third.
UMass extended its lead in the bottom of the fourth, when junior designated hitter Matt Boulanger (Westfield, Mass.) blasted a three-run home run off Quinnipiac starter Dave Bennett. It was Boulanger's first career homer, and the first by a Minuteman this season.
UMass added another run in the bottom of the fourth to take a 5-0 lead into the fifth inning on an RBI single by senior third baseman Aaron Senez (Springfield, Mass.). Sophomore second baseman Adam Stojanowski (West Roxbury, Mass.) then hit a solo shot for his first career home run in the bottom of the fifth.
As Santos cruised through the middle innings, allowing just four hits in his seven innings, UMass picked up another run in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI single by freshman outfielder Derrick Durepo (Ware, Mass.). The Braves cut the Minuteman advantage to 8-2 in the top of the eighth, as they scored two unearned runs off of freshman lefthander Keith Doherty (Quincy, Mass.).
Massachusetts sealed the victory in the bottom of the eighth with a run-scoring double by Maumus followed by a two-run blast by junior catcher Chris Morgan (Cranston, R.I.).
The Minutemen and Braves will return to action on Sunday as they make the trip to Hamden, Conn., for a 12:00 noon contest at Quinnipiac.
