The University of Massachusetts defeated Indiana, 4-1, in field hockey action this afternoon in Ann Arbor, Mich. The Minutewomen outshot the Hoosiers, 27-6, in the game.
Massachusetts struck first with an unassisted goal from freshman Ashley Gilbert (Turner, Maine) with 24:30 remaining in the first half. The goal was the first of her collegiate career. Two minutes later, senior Anke Bruemmer (Koeln, Germany) capitalized on a penalty corner. She was assisted by junior Stacey Blue (Bellingham, Mass.) and senior Kaitlyn Byron (Greenfield, Mass.). With 17:48 remaining in the first half, Bruemmer scored again on a penalty corner assisted by senior Lindsay Abbott (Northampton, Mass.) and freshman Adrianne Monaco (Oxford, N.Y.) to send the Minutewomen into the second half with a 3-0 lead.
Kimberly Nash scored Indiana's lone goal early in the second half. Bruemmer's third goal came with four minutes left in the game, sealing the victory for UMass.
Sophomore goaltender Ashley Egland (Ilion, N.Y.) and freshman Christine Tocco (Reading, Mass.) combined to hold the Hoosiers to only one goal.
The Minutewomen return to action Wednesday, Sept. 26, when they take on Harvard at 3:30 p.m. in Cambridge, Mass.
