AMHERST, Mass. -- Freshman shortstop Cullan Maumus (New Orleans, La.) singled in junior third baseman Aaron Senez (Springfield, Mass.) and junior outfielder Connell Clark (Springfield, Mass.) in the bottom of the eighth to break a 9-9 tie as the University of Massachusetts baseball team defeated Atlantic 10 foe St. Joseph's, 11-9, this afternoon at Earl Lorden Field. UMass improves to 23-17 (13-6 A-10), while St. Joseph's falls to 22-25-1 (9-10 A-10). The Minutemen swept the Hawks in the three game series as UMass took a doubleheader yesterday. With the win, UMass is now tied with Temple for first place in the conference.
Junior outfielder Mike Kulak (Bristol, Conn.) led the UMass offense with five runs batted in as he went three for four with a two-run triple in the second, a bases loaded walk in the third and a two-run home run in the fifth for his third of the season. Senior outfielder Nick Gorneault (Springfield, Mass.) hit a two-run homer in the first for his 12th of the season.
Junior righty Jesse Santos (Chelmsford, Mass.) earned the win to improve to 6-4 on the season as he pitched two and 2/3 innings allowing no runs on four hits, while Jim Boylan received the loss to fall to 4-6. Senior righty Nick Skirkanich (Cheshire, Conn.) earned the save for his third of the year and eighth of his career, which ties the school record with Steve Levy who pitched for UMass between 1994-1997.
Outfielder Scott Anderson (Easton, Conn.), outfielder Gavin Clark (Springfield, Mass.), Gorneault, Skirkanich and lefty pitcher Craig Szado (Monson, Mass.) were honored before the game as they played their last home game of their careers.
The Minutemen will conclude regular season play when they travel to Cincinnati, Ohio, to play Xavier in a doubleheader at noon on Saturday, May 12, and in a single game at noon on Sunday, May 13.
