Cincinnati, Ohio. -- The University of Massachusetts baseball team swept Xavier in a doubleheader to clinch a berth in the 2001 Verizon Atlantic 10 Championship. The Minutemen won the first game 6-4, then posted a 10-8 victory in game two to sweep the doubleheader. UMass improves to 25-17 on the season and 15-6 in the Atlantic 10, while Xavier falls to 21-33 overall and 8-13 in the Atlantic 10.
In game one, junior outfielder Mike Kulak (Bristol, Conn.) went two for four, with an RBI single in the top of the fourth inning to break a 4-4 tie and propel the Minutemen to victory. Sophomore designated hitter Tim Klett (Chicopee, Mass.) added a home run and two runs batted in, while senior lefthanded pitcher earned the victory, tossing a complete game and striking out seven.
In the second game, Klett had a sacrifice fly in the fifth inning to put the Minutemen in the lead for good, while Kulak added an RBI single. Kulak and senior outfielder Nick Gorneault (Springfield, Mass.) added RBI singles in the sixth inning to extend the UMass lead. Redshirt freshman righthanded pitcher Eric Chown (Fall River, Mass.) earned the victory in relief, allowing only two hits in 2-2/3 innings.
Kulak finished the day five for nine with a home run and six runs batted in, while Klett was five for six with a homer and three RBI.
The Minutemen conclude their three-game series with Xavier tomorrow, May 13, with a single game at 12:00 p.m. The Verizon Atlantic 10 Championship begins on Thursday, May 17.
