Baseball Sweeps Doubleheader With St. Joseph's

AMHERST, Mass. -- The University of Massachusetts baseball team swept a doubleheader with Atlantic 10 foe St. Joseph's, this afternoon at Earl Lorden Field. UMass is now 22-17 (12-6 A-10), while st. Joseph's is 22-24-1 (9-9 A-10). With the two wins, head coach Mike Stone picks up his 393rd victory to break the school record of 392 set by Dick Bergquist from 1967-1987. The Minutemen won the first game, 13-8, and took the second game, 9-5. These two teams will play a single-game tomorrow at noon to conclude the three-game series.
In the first game, sophomore catcher Tom Ellerbrook (Northampton, Mass.) led the UMass offense with four runs batted in, while senior outfielder Gavin Clark (Springfield, Mass.) and senior outfielder Nick Gorneault (Springfield, Mass.) each hit solo home runs. Sophomore righty Paul Washenko (Orange, Conn.) earned the win to improve to 1-0 as he pitched five and 2/3 innings allowing four runs with for earned on eight hits and striking out seven.
In the second game, Gorneault hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the sixth for his second of the day and 11th of the season. Freshman righty Eric Chown (Fall River, Mass.) earned the win for UMass to improve to 4-1 on the season as he pitched six and 1/3 innings allowing five runs with five earned on eight hits and striking out three.
