WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Senior outfielder Gavin Clark (Springfield, Mass.) singled in senior outfielder Nick Gorneault (Springfield, Mass.) in the top of the ninth to break a 6-6 tie as the University of Massachusetts baseball team defeated Atlantic 10 rival George Washington, 7-6, this afternoon at Barcroft Park. UMass improves to 20-17 (10-6 A-10), while George Washington falls to 33-19 (13-9 A-10). The Minutemen went 2-1 in the three game series as the teams split a doubleheader on Saturday.
After two scoreless innings UMass got on the board in the top of the third inning as Gorneault doubled in sophomore catcher Tom Ellerbrook (Northampton, Mass.). George Washington then answered back with two runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 2-1 lead. The Minutemen tied the game at 2-2 in the fourth inning and then took the lead in the fifth when sophomore first baseman Jeff Altieri (Whitinsville, Mass.) doubled in junior outfielder Mike Kulak (Bristol, Conn.).
After George Washington took a 4-3 lead in the fifth, junior third baseman Aaron Senez (Springfield, Mass.) hit a solo home run for his second of the season to tie the game at 4-4. George Washington scored two in the seventh and UMass scored two in the eighth on an error by the first baseman. Clark then singled in Gorneault in the top of the ninth to give UMass a 7-6 lead.
Freshman righty Eric Chown (Fall River, Mass.) earned the win for UMass to improve to 3-1 as he pitched two innings allowing no runs on one hit. Senior righty Nick Skirkanich (Cheshire, Conn.) pitched seven innings for the Minutemen with four strike outs.
Head coach Mike Stone now has 391 wins bringing him one win away from tying Dick Bergquist in wins at UMass with 392.
The Minutemen return to action on Tuesday, May 8, and Wednesday, May 9, when they host A-10 foe St. Joseph's at Earl Lorden Field. The two teams will play a doubleheader at noon on Tuesday, and a single game at noon on Wednesday.
