Baseball Drops Doubleheader To Rhode Island

AMHERST, Mass. -- The University of Massachusetts baseball team dropped a doubleheader to Atlantic 10 foe Rhode Island, this afternoon at Earl Lorden Field. UMass is now 14-14 (8-5 A-10), while Rhode Island is 19-18 (4-7 A-10). The Rams won the first game, 13-5, and took the second game, 12-4, as they hit three home runs in the first game and six in the second.
Senior outfielder Gavin Clark (Springfield, Mass.) drove in four out of UMass' five runs to lead the offense in the first game. He hit a one-run single in the second inning driving in junior third baseman Aaron Senez (Springfield, Mass.) and then he hit a three-run homer to center field for his ninth of the season in the sixth. URI's Jonathan Maloney hit two homers and Dan Pearce earned the win as he pitched seven innings allowing five runs with one earned on eight hits. Senior righty Nick Skirkanich (Cheshire, Conn.) received the loss to fall to 3-2 on the season.
URI hit six home runs in the second game and Reid Willett earned the win to improve to 4-4 as he pitched six innings allowing four runs with two earned on five hits. Junior outfielder Mike Kulak (Bristol, Conn.) led the UMass offense as he hit a two-run homer for his first of the season in the sixth to drive in Clark who singled to right field. Freshman righty Eric Chown (Fall River, Mass.) received the loss to fall to 2-1.
The Minutemen return to action when they travel to Cambridge, Mass, on Tuesday, April 24, to take on Harvard at 3:00 p.m.
