Baseball Sweeps Doubleheader With Fordham

BRONX, N.Y. -- The University of Massachusetts baseball team swept a doubleheader with Atlantic 10 foe Fordham, this afternoon at Jack Coffey Field. UMass is now 14-12 (8-3 A-10), while Fordham is 15-18 (3-8 A-10). The Minutemen won the first game, 10-4, and took the second game, 9-7.

In the first game, senior outfielder Nick Gorneault (Springfield, Mass.) led the UMass offense by hitting a solo and a two-run home run to give him four on the year. Junior outfielder Connell Clark (Springfield, Mass.) and sophomore catcher Tom Ellerbrook (Northampton, Mass.) each added two runs batted in, while senior outfielder Gavin Clark (Springfield, Mass.) hit a solo homer for his eighth of the season. Senior lefty Craig Szado (Monson, Mass.) earned the win to improve to 2-3 as he pitched seven innings allowing four runs with two unearned on eight hits and striking out two.

The Minutemen came back from a 7-6 deficit to score three runs in the top of the seventh to win the second game 9-7. Junior outfielder Mike Kulak (Bristol, Conn.) hit a two-run single to left field driving in junior third baseman Aaron Senez (Springfield, Mass.) and sophomore first baseman Jeff Altieri (Whitinsville, Mass.) to give UMass a 8-7 lead. Freshman shortstop Adam Stojanowski (West Roxbury, Mass.) singled in Kulak for a 9-7 lead. Junior righty Jesse Santos (Chelmsford, Mass.) earned the win to improve to 3-3 as he pitched seven innings allowing seven runs with five unearned on eight hits and striking out six. Altieri hit his fifth homer of the season as he hit a two-run homer in the top of the first.

UMass will host on Rhode Island tomorrow, April 21, in a doubleheader at Earl Loden Field at noon.
