PHILADELPHIA, Pa.-- Senior pitcher Nick Skirkanich (Cheshire, Conn.) earned his first win of the season, giving up only one run and four hits in seven innings with four strikeouts as the University of Massachusetts baseball team defeated A-10 foe La Salle, 15-2 this afternoon at Hank DeVincent Field. The Minutemen improve to 3-8 overall (2-1 A-10), while La Salle falls to 4-11 overall (1-2 A-10). UMass split a double-header yesterday with La Salle, as they lost the first game 9-8 (10) and won the second 10-7.

UMass opened the game by scoring four runs in the top of the first. Junior infielder Aaron Senez (Springfield, Mass.) doubled to left field with the bases loaded and advanced to third on a throwing error earning two RBI, as UMass jumped to a 3-0 lead. Freshman Adam Stojanowski (West Roxbury, Mass.) singled to right field to drive in Senez and to give UMass a 4-0 lead.

In the top of the second, sophomore first baseman Jeff Altieri (Whitinsville, Mass.) doubled to right center driving in both senior outfielder Nick Gorneault (Springfield, Mass.) and sophomore infielder Sean Sarno (Stoneham, Mass.). In the top of the third UMass scored two more times, including Stojanowki stealing home.

Senior outfielder Gavin Clark (Springfield, Mass.) hit a solo home run to right field in the sixth to give UMass a 9-1 lead. UMass scored two more times in the inning to increase the lead to 11-1.

Senez earned his third RBI of the game when he singled to center field, driving in Altieri. Sophomore catcher Tom Ellerbrook (Northampton, Mass.) singled up the middle in the top of the ninth for two RBI. Sophomore shortstop Matt Boulanger (Westfield, Mass.) scored on a passed ball to give UMass a 15-2 lead.

Senez and Ellerbrook led the UMass offense with three RBI each. Senez had four hits and Ellerbrook had two.

The Minutemen return to action on Tuesday, March 27, when they host Hartford at 3:00 p.m., at Earl Lorden Field.
