Norwich, Conn. -- Senior outfielder Nick Gorneault (Springfield, Mass.) went three for five, including his second home run of the season, but it was not enough as the University of Massachusetts baseball team fell to the University of Connecticut, 13-11, at Dodd Stadium. UMass falls to 3-9 on the season, while UConn improves to 7 13. The all-time series is now even at 65-65-2.
UMass got on the board first with one run in the opening frame before UConn answered with three of its own in the bottom half of the inning. The Minutemen used an error and a wild pitch to come up with three of their own in the second in which Gorneault had one of his team-leading three hits. UConn then tied the game at 4-4 in the bottom of the second.
UConn's Mike Scott doubled in the fifth to make it 6-4. UMass then added three in the fifth, one in the sixth and two in the seventh, to be up one run heading into the eighth. A Jonas Swyer balk allowed junior outfielder Connell Clark (Springfield, Mass.) to come home for the final Minuteman run of the game before UConn rallied for four runs in the bottom of the eighth.
Swyer received his first career victory, while freshman Anthony Gallo (Peabody, Mass.) picked up his first loss of the season.
The Minutemen return to action on Saturday, March 31, when they take on A-10 foe St. Joseph's in a double header starting at noon. The three game series is concluded on Sunday, April 1 at noon.
