SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Syracuse's Carrie Soults scored four goals to lead the No. 10 Syracuse University women's lacrosse team to a 15-8 victory over the visiting University of Massachusetts Minutewomen this afternoon in the Carrier Dome. With the victory the Orangewomen improve to 1-3 on the season while UMass falls to 0-4.
Kim Wayne struck first for SU posting an unassisted goal in the first minute and a half of play. Just over a minute later, she found teammate Lauren Brady for the 2-0 lead.
The Minutewomen answered with an unassisted goal in the 24th minute by Rachel Ingraffea (Ithaca, N.Y.), but Orangewoman Leigh-Ann Zimmer returned the favor at the 21:17 mark to maintain Syracuse's two-point lead. UMass' Hope Zelinger (Ellicott City, Md.) and Kara DePaula (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) scored in the next three minutes tying the game at three with 17:32 left in the first half.
The Orangewomen pulled ahead on a 4-0 run over the next 12 minutes to claim the lead for good. SU had a 9-4 advantage at the intermission and continued its momentum as they opened the second half on a 4-0 run to clinch the 15-8 victory.
Goalkeepers Cyndi Doyle (Bridgewater, Vt.) and Jen Nardi (Valley Cottage, N.Y.) combined to post 12 saves for the Minutewomen while Carla Gigon had seven saves for the Orangewomen.
UMass returns to action on Wednesday, March 28, when it travels to Vermont for a non-conference game with the Catamounts.
