RICHMOND, Va. -- Senior outfielder Gavin Clark (Springfield, Mass.) hit his first home run of the season, but it was not enough as the University of Massachusetts baseball team fell to Richmond by a score of 5-3 this afternoon at Pitt Field. The Minutemen fall to 1-6 on the season, while the Spiders improve to 10-11.
Richmond got on the board first with a run in the bottom of the first when freshman outfielder Bryan Pritz scored on a groundout by freshman Adam Tidball. UMass came back immediately with a run in the second on Clark's home run.
The Minutemen took a 3-1 lead in the top of the seventh. Sophomore catcher Tom Ellerbrook (Northampton, Mass.) singled and scored on an error. Junior outfielder Connell Clark (Springfield, Mass.) also singled and scored on a single by senior outfielder Nick Gorneault (Springfield, Mass.).
The Spiders scored the deciding runs in the bottom of the seventh when sophomore shortstop David Reaver had a two-run single that tied the game at 3-3. Pritz then scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch and sophomore first baseman Vito Chiaravalloti scored the final run on a RBI single by Tidball.
Ellerbrook led UMass in hits with two. Sophomore Pat Reedy (New Bedford, Mass.) pitched 6.1 innings, giving up eight hits, four earned runs and had two strikeouts, while Richmond's Brian Lane allowed six hits, three runs and two earned runs.
