DOVER, Del. -- Senior outfielder Gavin Clark (Springfield, Mass.) hit his second home run of the season, but it was not enough as the University of Massachusetts baseball team fell to Delaware State by a score of 12-5 this afternoon at Soldier Field. The Minutemen fall to 1-7 on the season, while the Hornets improve to 13-6.

UMass had seven hits, while Delaware State had 12 hits, including three home runs, off of four UMass pitchers. The Hornets scored the first run of the game in the bottom of first before junior infielder Aaron Senez (Springfield, Mass.) tied the game in the top of the second when he scored on a throwing error by the pitcher. The Hornets answered back in the bottom of the inning with four runs to take the lead for good.

Clark hit his home run in the top of the fourth to cut the lead to 5-2, but the Hornets scored twice in the fifth and once in the sixth for a 8-2 lead.

The Minutemen cut the lead to 8-5 in the eighth when they scored three times on unearned runs. Clark scored on a throwing error by the pitcher after he started the inning with a single and advanced on throwing errors. Senior outfielder Nick Gorneault (Springfield, Mass.) scored on a wild pitch and sophomore outfielder Tim Klett (Chicopee) scored on a ground out by Senez. Delaware State came right back by scoring four runs in the bottom of the inning, including a three-run home run by Phil Sullinger.

Delaware State's Joe Brzeczek allowed seven hits and just one earned run for his third win of the season, while senior David Loonie (Longmeadow, Mass.) received the loss.

The Minutemen return to action when they begin Atlantic 10 play with a three-game series versus La Salle in Philadelphia on March 24-25. On Saturday, UMass will play a double-header at noon and conclude the series on Sunday with a single game at noon. La Salle is 3-9 overall on the season.
