LYNCHBURG, Va. -- Sophomore shortstop Matt Boulanger (Westfield, Mass.) went two for three with a run batted in, but it was not enough as the University of Massachusetts baseball team suffered a 13-4 loss at Liberty. The Minutemen fall to 1-5 on the season with the defeat, while Liberty wins the series two games to one and improves to 10-8 on the year.
Liberty jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, with the runs scoring on a bases loaded walk and a double play. The Flames increased their lead to 5-0 in the third inning, on a two-run single by senior outfielder Trey Miller and an RBI single by sophomore second baseman Larry Wayne York.
UMass scored its first run of the game in the top of the fourth, when senior outfielder Nick Gorneault (Springfield, Mass.) tripled and scored on an RBI groundout by senior outfielder Gavin Clark (Springfield, Mass.). But Liberty came back with five more runs in the bottom of the fourth, to take an insurmountable 10-1 lead. Miller delivered the big hit of the inning with a bases loaded double to drive in three runs.
The Minutemen would add two more runs in the fifth inning and one in the sixth to conclude their scoring. Freshman second baseman Adam Stojanowski (West Roxbury, Mass.) had an RBI double, while Gorneault added a sacrifice fly and Boulanger recorded an RBI single.
Liberty senior righthander Danny Valentin earned the victory on the mound, allowing four runs on eight hits in six innings to improve his record to 4-1. Junior righthander Jesse Santos (Chelmsford, Mass.) took the loss for UMass, allowing 10 runs on nine hits and three-and-two-thirds innings of work.
Freshman righthander Brandon White (Foster, R.I.) tossed one inning out shutout relief out of the UMass bullpen, while redshirt freshman righthander Eric Chown (Fall River, Mass.) did not allow an earned run in one inning of action. Junior outfielder Connell Clark (Springfield, Mass.) went two for five at the plate for the Minutemen.
UMass returns to action tomorrow, March 20, when it plays at Richmond at 2:30 p.m.
