ITHACA, N.Y. - The University of Massachusetts women's tennis team defeated the University of Maryland-Baltimore County and Binghamton College en route to it's 2-1 record at this weekend's Cornell Invitational.
In their first match, the Minutewomen edged UMBC, 4-3. Both teams took three single matches apiece, but UMass decided the outcome in doubles. The tandems of freshman Francesca Mancini (Milan, Italy) and freshman Jafra Depontes (Kaliua-Kona, Hawaii) as well as freshman Susan Hyams (Cincinnati, Ohio) and junior Helena Horak (Westlake Village, Calif.) each picked up wins to seal the victory.
In the second match, UMass took four out of six singles matches and swept the doubles to knock off Binghmaton College 5-2. Depontes, junior Annie Hamilton (Plano, Texas), Horak, and Hyams all picked up singles victories.
In the final match, the Minutewomen were swept by host school Cornell, 7-0.
Mancini, who was forced out of two singles and one doubles match because of a pulled muscle in her leg, is not sure if she will play the Minutewomen's next match on Saturday Feb. 24. UMass will host Army at 6:00. The match will take place at Hampshire College.
