AMHERST, Mass. -- The University of Massachusetts women's tennis team fell to Army, 7-2, Saturday night, Feb. 24, at Hampshire College.
In singles, the only victorious Minutewoman was freshman Francesca Mancini (Milan, Italy). She easily defeated Army's Annie Weber in straight sets, 6-1, 6-0, at the No. 1 position. In the process, she improved her overall record to 1-2, after her injury plagued weekend at the Cornell Invitational where she dropped her first two matches of the spring season.
In doubles, Mancini was part of the only tandem to pull out a victory. She teamed up with freshman Jafra Depontes (Kaliua-Kona, Hawaii) at No. 1 to defeat Cheryl Hamilton and Annie Collier of Army, 9-8. They are now 2-2 overall.
Next up for the Minutewomen is a trip to Cambridge, Mass. for a match with Harvard on Sunday, March 4, at 4:00 p.m.
