AMHERST, Mass. -- Michael Schutte recorded three goals and Dan Kerluke added two more as the University of Maine defeated the University of Massachusetts 5-1, tonight in Hockey East action at the Mullins Center.

With the game already 1-0, in favor of the Black Bears on Kerluke's eighth goal of the season, they tallied three goals in the second period on UMass senior netminder Markus Helanen (Vantaa, Finland). Schutte recorded his fifth and sixth of the year at 5:41 and 7:33 respectively, while Kerluke added his second of the game and ninth of the year at 11:05.

At the 3:44 mark of the third, Schutte completed his hat trick by beating UMass junior Mike Johnson (Excelsior, Minn.), who had replaced Helenan in net to start the period. UMass got on the board at 11:23 when junior Darcy King (Barrie, Ontario) beat Maine goalie Matt Yeats. Junior Luke Duplessis (Framingham, Mass.) and sophomore Jimmy Callahan (Lexington, Mass.) each picked up an assist on King's fourth of the season.

Helanen made 18 saves during the first two periods for the Minutemen, while Johnson stopped 14 shots in the third. Yeats made 17 saves for Maine.

The win improves Maine to 13-9-6 overall and 8-6-4 in Hockey East, while the loss drops the Minutemen to 7-20-3 overall and 6-13-1 in Hockey East.

The Minutemen will not return to action until Friday, Feb. 23, when they travel to Chestnut Hill to take on top ranked Boston College. Game time is 7:00 p.m.
