CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Junior netminder Mike Johnson (Excelsior, Minn.) made a UMass Division I team record 60 saves as the University of Massachusetts hockey team picked up a much needed point in a 3-3 tie with the No. 2 ranked Boston College Eagles Friday night at Kelley Rink.
UMass got on the board first as senior Kris Wallis (Agassiz, British Columbia) netted his seventh of the year from sophomore Brad Nizwantowski (Peabody, Mass.) and senior Jay Shaw (Cranston, R.I.) at 3:38 of the first period. Boston College tied the game at the 18:45 mark when Brian Gionta scored his 25th of the season.
In the second, UMass scored first again. This time, senior R.J. Gates (Plainville, Conn.) beat Eagle netminder Scott Clemmensen for his second of the year. Senior Jeff Turner (Saginaw, Mich.) and sophomore Tim Turner (Saginaw, Mich.) notched assists on the goal at 9:10. Three and a half minutes after Krys Kolanos tied the game for the Eagles, Tim Turner connected on his 15th of the year and gave the Minutemen a 3-2 lead heading into the third period. Jeff Turner and junior Toni S?derholm (Helsinki, Finland) assisted on the play.
The only goal of the third came from BC's Jeff Giuliano at the 7:08 mark. Overtime was much of the same as Johnson continued to deny the Eagles chances. He ended up with 60 saves on the night, which is a UMass Division I single game record. Clemmensen stopped 26 Minutemen shots.
UMass is now 7-20-4 overall and 6-13-2 in Hockey East, while the Eagles now stand at 23-8-2 overall and 14-5-2 in Hockey East. The Minutemen are now tied with Merrimack for the eighth and final playoff spot in Hockey East.
The two teams will meet again tomorrow night, Feb. 24, at the Mullins Center. The game is set to begin at 7:00.
